In the meantime, let’s take a quick look at the history of garages here.

Early Uses

The earliest garages weren’t garages at all, but rather repurposed barns. These would normally house the horse carriage, along with the horses and tack, but were replaced with automobiles when they displaced carriages. However, for a long time, it was common to see a family’s automobile sheltered right by their horses and tack. This didn’t change until a major shift in automobile needs that was catered to by the SEARS Roebuck catalog.

Speaking of, did you know there was a time when you could order your pain medications, your garage, and even your entire home from a catalog? That’s right, as automobiles became more prominent, and even the average family could start to afford one, prefabricated garages became popular. These could be ordered right from a catalog. Prefabricated garages were constructed from timber, so there aren’t really any in existence today.

The type of garage we use today did not gain popularity until after World War II when the economy was back on track and automobiles were more prevalent than ever. By this time, home design had come to include a garage. This allowed people to come home from work, park their car, and walk right into their home.

Of course, garages have changed in recent years, too. As recently as the 1970s, the trend of converting home garages into other useful rooms gained traction, and we see a resurgence of this today. It is extremely common to find a home gym, spare room, entertainment room, or even a home bar in the garage area. The 1970s were also the time that automatic garage doors came around, making access to your garage easier than ever before.

We hope you found this quick history of garages interesting.
